課程概述 |
This course aims to present selected theories of health inequality, historical evolution of public health, and effective strategies for achieving health equity. The course consists of three parts. After reviewing lessons learned from the course: “Introduction to Society and Health” (845 U1190), the first part deals with selected theories of health inequality. The second part reviews the historical development of public health. The third part examines selective strategies for tackling health inequalities, consisting of healthy start, healthy place, fair employment and decent work, social protection, primary health care/universal health care, health equity in all policies, fair financing and market responsibility, political empowerment, good global government, and monitoring, research, and training. |

At the end of this course students should be able to:
-discuss theories of health inequality;
-describe major milestones of pubic health movement; and
-illustrate effective strategies for achieving health equity.

課程要求 |
THIS COURSE MEETS FOR TWO HOURS, ONCE A WEEK AND IS CONDUCTED MAINLY AS A This course meets for two hours, once a week and is conducted mainly as a participatory seminar. Students are expected to read all required readings and prepare a short critique before the class. Each student is required to present and lead the discussion on one tackling strategy in the third part of the course. There will be a 10-15 pages project report, due June 15, 2011. Students are to be graded according to their performance in short critique (20%), class discussion (30%), and project report (50%). |
